A few months ago, I stumbled across the Omnivore Salt Kickstarter. I loved it. I’m a bit of a foodie and I love experimenting with herbs and spices. An old family recipe that claimed to make everything taste better and reduce my sodium intake was always bound to peak my interest.
After initially backing at a low level because the salt wasn’t able to be shipped overseas, poor Angelo must have been bombarded with requests to allow overseas orders (I certainly asked). Thankfully, he made it happen, and this morning my reward turned up in the mail.
For the first time in a couple of weeks I was really excited to cook dinner. I tried it out on a sirloin steak, and also made a new vinaigrette containing red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, olive oil and a teaspoon of this magical dust. I didn’t do anything I wouldn’t ordinarily do when making this type of meal. The only real change was instead of salt and pepper on my steak, I rubbed it with some Omnivore Salt.
I’m happy to report it does genuinely make your food taste better. It’s hard to describe, but the best way to put it is that the Omnivore Salt makes the flavours ‘pop’. It’s a little like going from analogue to digital. It highlights the flavours and made an ordinary steak into something special.
Angelo has begun selling his salt to the public. If you’re interested in getting your hands on some, visit his website.
