Who is Ordinary Jane?

Who is Ordinary Jane?

This week we’re excited to announce the arrival of our newest service for crowdfunders, The Ordinary Jane Test.

But this service does leave the question: who is Ordinary Jane?

Put simply, she is one of my oldest friends. I met her in church one day when she was 13, and I was 15. She had come with one of the girls from the youth group, and the first thing she did was to ask me a question.

In the 15+ years since that moment, I’ve forgotten exactly what the question was, but it was the first of thousands.

Ordinary Jane is just an ordinary girl living her ordinary life, but she has many special qualities. One of the things I love (and sometimes hate) about her is that she is the most genuinely curious person I’ve ever met.

She loves to know who, what, why? She is amazing at finding out who you are, what you do, and why you do it in a grand total of 5 minutes flat. She is intelligent, and smart as a tack. She’s honest and blunt. When she doesn’t understand, she wants to dig deeper.

And that is why I’m so happy to partner with her on this service.

Last week I blogged about The Curse of Knowledge. It’s that unfortunate thing where you are so involved in your project, often the obvious things (like whether your project is a TV show, webseries. or a movie) fail to be mentioned in your campaign.

This is off-putting to ordinary backers. While you might have told your close friends and your family enough that their prior knowledge will fill in the gap, you won’t have told that guy you went to school with and haven’t seen in 5 years. But he’s lurking in your Facebook feed, and he might be feeling generous enough that day to help you out (I had many such backers on my own recent campaign).

It’s a real problem. And Ordinary Jane is going to help you fix it.

She will take a look at your campaign. Then she’ll answer a set of questions around what she understood. She’ll watch your video, read your reward-levels, and your campaign description. And then she’s going to ask the questions she will inevitably have.

The results will be delivered back your inbox within three days.

You will know whether your campaign has forgotten a crucial detail. You’ll know what a potential backer sees and takes away when they look at your campaign ‘cold’. It’s a great investment when running an all-or-nothing campaign on a platform like Kickstarter or PledgeMe.
